  • Preservation Community Events

    The City of San Antonio Office of Historic Preservation and the University of Texas at San Antonio will host a community symposium from 6:30 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 14 at the AIA Center for Architecture at the Pearl Brewery, 200 East Grayson. Experts in historic preservation will discuss sustainability, energy efficiency, and the economics of restoring historic buildings. The goal of the symposium is to provide citizens with valuable information about the pros and cons of preservation. Professionals with specific experience in restoration will be available to answer any questions regarding preservation. The community symposium is free and open to the public so invite anyone that might be interested in learning more about preservation and sustainability. If possible, we would really appreciate it if you can post this information in your neighborhood newsletter or pass this message along to your friends and neighbors.

    This event will kick off a weekend-long workshop on wood window restoration. The window restoration workshop is on Friday, May 15 and Saturday, May 16, at the historic Fire Station #11, 323 S. Frio St. Participants in the workshop will learn the basics of how to restore wood windows. Homeowners can register for a one-day course on repair and maintenance of wood windows. Contractors can register for a two-day course and certification in advanced wood window restoration. There is an informational flyer and registration form attached to this email for your convenience.   • Central Texas Zero Waste Alliance Logo/Tagline Competition

    From the Central Texas Zero Waste Alliance

    Are you an artist or graphic designer? Are you a creative thinker? Are you passionate about the environment? Would you like to participate in a logo contest?

    The Central Texas Zero Waste Alliance is pleased to announce its logo competition. The Alliance needs a logo that can help convey its mission and wishes to receive public ideas and input. This contest will determine the first CTZWA logo. The selected logo will be used on the CTZWA web site banner, favicon, stationary letterhead and will most likely be adapted for use on items such as caps, t-shirts, pens, etc. The logo should convey the CTZWA vision and mission as stated on the CTZWA Logo Contest page on the website at www.ctzwa.org and below:

    VISION The CTZWA is committed to the realization of a sustainable Zero Waste (or darn close) economy in Central Texas before 2040. MISSION The CTZWA will educate about, advocate for, and promote Zero Waste in Central Texas, by working with the general public, elected officials, governmental staff, businesses, schools, Councils of Government, institutions, state agencies, religious organizations, non-profits, the media, citizen and environmental groups, and any other relevant entities to achieve the above Vision.

    Entrants are encouraged to submit logos containing the full name of the organization (Central Texas Zero Waste Alliance) and should allow for the substitution of member chapter titles (i.e., Austin Zero Waste Alliance). Be advised that entries may be anonymously posted on the CTZWA website for general membership comment.

    There is no financial Reward for the winning design; however, artists will be allowed their small initials or logo as part of the design. Credit will also be given to the designer on the CTZWA web site.

    Submissions may start immediately. The deadline for entries is 11:59 pm May 15, 2009. Participants are allowed to submit up to two entries. The winner will be announced by May 22, 2009 on the CTZWA web site. Anyone except contest judges may participate. Multi-color designs are preferred and should translate well into grayscale. Entries should be emailed with subject line “Logo Contest” to ctzwalliance@gmail.com along with phone and email contact information. Submit entries in jpeg format. Scanned artwork in jpeg format will be accepted and a graphic artist will convert it to the necessary formats if it is selected.

  • “Global Warming’s Toll on Texas Agriculture” Event April 9
